John Graunt is recognized as the father of demography for his systematic yet critical use of population data to investigate demographic processes. He originated a number of demographic techniques and demonstrated a healthy skepticism of his own data. Graunt was born in England in 1620.

Who are known as active population? All people of 15-59 years of their age, who are physically capable to earn their livelihood are collectively known as active population.

The average of the population at the beginning and at the end of one year is often used as an approxi- mation of the mean, or the mid-year population. The mid-year population is computed by letting the population increase at an annual geometric rate of 2 per cent for half a year.

To calculate the mean, add up all the values and divide by the number of values. There are two types of arithmetic mean: population mean (μ) and sample mean (x̄).
