Many of the NBA franchises get their names for their cities historical past, or from a city in which the team first originated in. This is especially true with the teams who entered the League after 1949, but even those teams have some history behind their names.

When Arthur McBride formed the Browns in 1946, the team held a contest not only to name the team but to come up with a mascot. As a result, the team decided that the helmet would have no logo – in fact, the helmet itself is the logo, in modern times.

According to Hanford Dixon, then a cornerback with the Browns, Dixon himself gave his defensive teammates the name “Dawgs” to inspire them before the 1985 season. Dixon and fellow cornerback Frank Minnifield started the idea of the pound by using the dog-versus-cat relationship between the quarterback and the defense.

The color brown is featured more prominently with a brown stripe and facemask added to the helmet on the logo. According to the Browns, however, the helmet’s new shade of orange “matches the passion of the Dawg Pound” and “the new brown facemask represents the strength and toughness of Cleveland.”

The Browns were originally members of the AAFC and won the league title in each of the four years of the AAFC’s existence. The most notable of these title-winning teams was the 1948 squad, which went 15–0 to become the first undefeated team in organized professional football history.

The New England Patriots unveiled a new logo in 2000 which depicts a silver patriot with a red and navy blue striped hat. The 2000 logo is a mirror image of the one designed in 1993, though a few changes have been made, the deepening of the blue shade.

Quite simply, the Cleveland Browns’ uniforms are orange because they aren’t named for the color brown. They’re named after their former coach, Paul Brown. The Browns originated in the All-American Football Conference before coming to the NFL in 1946.

While the team’s initial uniform reveal included brown and white jersey tops, as well as brown and white pants, the Browns later added orange pants to the mix for multiple games during the season, including their playoff-clinching victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, as well as their two postseason games.

Browns tweak helmet color, logos BEREA, Ohio — With the goal to “honor tradition and provide modern edge,” the Cleveland Browns revealed revamped logos Tuesday with a richer orange color and a brown face mask on the helmet.

According to the release, “the Browns’ updated look features brown jerseys with white numbers and white jerseys with brown numbers that will be worn with brown or white pants, both of which feature a brown stripe sandwiched by two orange stripes running down the side.

On Sunday afternoon the Cleveland Browns (yes, the Cleveland Browns) travel to Kansas City where they take on the defending Super Bowl Champion Chiefs: Kansas City is going with the usual red jersey with white pants, they’ve worn that eight times in 2020 and went 6-2 while doing so.

On Wednesday, Cleveland unveiled its uniforms for the 2020 season and beyond, which were inspired by the championship Browns teams of the past. While those will be the primary combinations, the Browns’ new wardrobe will also include white jerseys and white pants.
