In terms of resources, the New York Colony had enough agricultural land, coal, forestry, furs, and iron ore. The colony likewise produced major crops, particularly wheat, making it the breadbasket colony.

The main reasons for founding this colony were money and natural reasons. The colony was always up to date on food and everything. They were very efficient at the cooking and using of natural resources.

We’re right on the coast and we trade with countries like England, Africa, and the West Indies. In our colony, we use the resources and raw materials available to develop trade in corn and wheat and livestock including beef and pork.

The orginal name of New York City was New Amsterdam. The original colonial name of the State of New York was New Netherlands. In 1664, the English seized the city and colony from the Dutch. The English renamed both New York in honor of the Duke of York, the younger brother of King Charles II.

In 1609 an Englishman, Henry Hudson, sailed up the Hudson River. Then in 1624, the Dutch founded the first permanent trading post. In 1626 the first governor, Peter Minuit, bought the island of Manhattan from the Native Americans. The Dutch built a little town on the southern tip of Manhattan Island.

The Dutch first settled along the Hudson River in 1624; two years later they established the colony of New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island. In 1664, the English took control of the area and renamed it New York.

Along with Broadway, Wall Street is perhaps the best-known New York City thoroughfare.
