In 1882 Edison helped form the Edison Electric Illuminating Company of New York, which brought electric light to parts of Manhattan. But progress was slow. Most Americans still lit their homes with gas light and candles for another fifty years. Only in 1925 did half of all homes in the U.S. have electric power.

On September 30, 1882, the world’s first hydroelectric power plant began operation on the Fox River in Appleton, Wisconsin.

The Victorian society in which he lived needed electricity and in 1881 the Savoy Theatre was the first public venue to be lit by electric power, in place of the smelly gas lamps. A description of the World’s first power station opened in 1882 at Holborn Viaduct is given.

Letitia Christian Tyler, first wife of President John Tyler, served as First Lady of the United States from 1841 until her death at 51. She was the youngest First Lady to pass away and one of only three to have passed away in the White House.

James Buchanan, the 15th President of the United States (1857-1861), served immediately prior to the American Civil War. He remains the only President to be elected from Pennsylvania and to remain a lifelong bachelor.

The male equivalent of the title in countries where the head of state’s spouse has been a man, such as the Philippines or Malta, is first gentleman. While there has never been a male spouse of a U.S. president, “First Gentleman” is used in the United States for the husband of a mayor, governor, or president.

The Secretary of the Treasury pays a taxable pension to the president. Former presidents receive a pension equal to the salary of a Cabinet secretary (Executive Level I); as of 2020, it is $219,200 per year. The pension begins immediately after a president’s departure from office.

John F. Kennedy, assassinated at the age of 46 years, 177 days, was the nation’s shortest-lived president; the youngest to have died by natural causes was James K. Polk, who died of cholera at the age of 53 years, 225 days.

Reagan was the first president of the United States to have been divorced. Reagan was inaugurated in January 1981.

In 1981, Reagan significantly reduced the maximum tax rate, which affected the highest income earners, and lowered the top marginal tax rate from 70% to 50%; in 1986 he further reduced the rate to 28%. This was the slowest rate of growth in inflation adjusted spending since Eisenhower.

Reagan unexpectedly passed right in front of Hinckley. Believing he would never get a better chance, Hinckley fired a Röhm RG-14 . 22 Long Rifle blue steel revolver six times in 1.7 seconds. Five out of the six shots missed the president.
