In terms of area, Madhya Pradesh has the largest forest cover in the country followed by Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Maharashtra.

The Daintree Rainforest is estimated to be about 180 million years old making it the oldest forest in the world. In addition to being the oldest forest, the Daintree is also one of the largest continuous areas of rainforest in Australia – the Daintree Rainforest covers about 460 square miles (1,200 square kilometers).

Of the original 1.04 billion acres of virgin forest in the U.S., over 96% has been cut down. Most of these last original forests are found on National Forest land and other public lands. Most of these remaining public forests have no legal protection from clearcut logging.

Across the country, there are still groves of old-growth forests deep within a wilderness valley, protected in a recreational area or even in someone’s backyard.
