If they are switched, there will be a negative voltage. If the poles of your voltmeter are correctly connected, there is a possibility that the battery suffered a phenomenon called “polarity reversal”. This is a rare phenomenon that can happen at the end of a discharge with 2 or more batteries in series.

A voltmeter has positive and negative terminals. The positive input terminal is usually red and the negative terminal is black.

To measure a voltage (potential difference), a voltmeter must be connected in parallel with the component whose voltage you wish to measure. For example, if we connect a voltmeter across the terminals of a fully-charged automobile battery, it will indicate 12.6 volts.

How do you hook up a voltage gauge to a battery?

1. Step 1 – Determine Voltmeter Location.

If your voltmeter is of the ‘moving needle’ type, then it will not drain your battery even after a long vacation. If your meter has an LCD display on it, then there are electronics that need to be powered inside the unit – still not any more than an alarm system.

Find a mounting location for the voltmeter; under the dash usually works. Mount the voltmeter with the screws provided. On the back of the voltmeter, there are two connections — one is positive and the other negative. Take careful note of which is which.

A healthy 12 volt motorcycle battery should maintain a range from 9.5 – 10.5 volts under the load for a good 30 seconds straight. If the battery begins to hold and then steadily drops in voltage, there is a problem. If the voltage instantly drops to 0 volts, that is also a problem.

If you don’t have a multimeter to tell you the voltage of your battery, you can do a test of your electrical system by starting the car and turning on the headlights. If they are dim, that indicates the lights are running off the battery and that little or no charge is being produced by the alternator.

Set a multimeter to measure voltage. Insert a probe into each slot and read the line voltage measurement. A properly working outlet gives a reading of 110 to 120 volts. If there is no reading, check the wiring and the outlet.

Live electrical wire always find a path to complete the circuit. Human body is also good conductor, so if you touch an electric circuit or live wire and the ground at the same time, you will become electricity’s easiest path. Electricity will flow through you, and you could be seriously hurt or killed.

If the display screen reads between 110 and 120 volts, your meter is working correctly. Insert the probes of the meter into the unknown fixture. If voltage on the screen reads between 110 and 120 volts, the fixture is live.
