Most places named after Washington 18 (UPI) — A survey of the Census Bureau’s geographic database found George Washington has the most places named after him in the United States, officials said.

Twenty of America’s forty-two presidents have had warships named in their honor. A dozen presidents have had submarines named after them, ten presidents have had aircraft carriers named after them, and three have had both submarines and aircraft carriers carry their names.

USS President Lincoln, commissioned 1917, sunk 1918. USS Abraham Lincoln (SSBN-602), in commission 1961–1981. USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72), commissioned in 1989. USS President Grant (ID-3014), later USS Republic (AP-33), in commission 1917–1919, 1921, and 1941–1945.

For ship types now being procured for the Navy, or recently procured for the Navy, naming rules can be summarized as follows: Aircraft carriers are generally named for past U.S. Presidents. Of the last 14, 10 were named for past U.S. Presidents, and 2 for Members of Congress.

Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier

As of March 2021, thirty-seven ships currently in commission are named after US states and one is named after a territory. Eleven states and one territory have been announced as names for ships that are under construction or authorized.

USS Zumwalt

The WW II USS Alaska was a large cruiser, not officially a battleship, and at that time Alaska was not a state, it was a territory. The States Hawaii and Montana are the only states without a battleship to their name.

The USS Missouri

The growing range of naval engagements led to the aircraft carrier replacing the battleship as the leading capital ship during World War II, with the last battleship to be launched being HMS Vanguard in 1944.
