Obsidian is a black volcanic glass. Though the black stones have a shiny surface, obsidian is not crystalline, unlike most gemstones, and may be formed out of various composition subjected to volcanic activity. See also Obsidian: Stone of Grounding.

It is the striped, semiprecious variety of agate with white and black alternating bands. The name comes from the Greek onux, meaning “nail” or “claw”, referring to the mineral’s color, and it was used by the Romans for a variety of stones including alabaster, chalcedony, and what is now called onyx marble.

Vinegar, an acid, dissolves bits of a material called calcium carbonate in the limestone. This releases carbon dioxide, a gas that rises to the surface as a stream of bubbles. Rocks that don’t contain calcium carbonate won’t fizz.

Black is the color of the past and future, of good and evil and everything in-between. It does not represent one thing, it is all things and infinite possibilities. Certain animals such as crows, cats, owls, moths, vultures and bats are associated with death; some because they feed on carrion, others because they are nocturnal. Along with death, vultures can also represent transformation and renewal.
