Charlotte Brontë did not opt for subtlety when she decided to get her own back on the teachers who had made her life a misery. Drawing graphically on her torrid days at the Clergy Daughters’ School at Cowan Bridge, Lancashire, she recreated it as the legendary Lowood School, in her novel Jane Eyre.

Jane Eyre finds herself shipped off a school at the age of 10, and remains at this school until after she turns 18. Lowood school is run under the idea that the students will be taught the teachings of God, and that they will learn to be proper and righteous as adults.

If there may be doubts about the inspirations for the other buildings, there is none about Lowood. The school is based upon Cowan Bridge School in Lancashire which Charlotte and her sisters attended as pupils.

The exterior of ‘Thornfield’, though, and most of the interiors, are Haddon Hall, just south of Bakewell, Derbyshire. It’s in the chapel of Haddon Hall that Jane comes within a whisker of marrying Rochester.

Jane’s employer and the master of Thornfield, Rochester is a wealthy, passionate man with a dark secret that provides much of the novel’s suspense.

Mr. Rochester is about twenty years older than Jane. He is likely between the ages of thirty-five and forty, while Jane is about nineteen.

Adèle is Mr. Rochester’s ward and the daughter of Céline Varens. Céline was Rochester’s mistress during his time in France, but Rochester cut her off after discovering Céline cheating with another man. Céline claims Adèle is his daughter, but the truth of his paternity remains ambiguous.

The scenes and setting mostly were the same. All the setting in the movie looked the way it was described in the book for the most part. That helped a lot because I could think back to the book and know what scene was going on. There were a lot of differences between the book Jane Eyre and the movie Jane Eyre.
