ASTM level 1 masks are the general standard for both surgical and procedural use. Level 2: moderate barrier protection for low-to-moderate levels of aerosols, sprays and fluids. Level 3: maximum barrier protection for any situation that has the potential for exposure to heavy levels of aerosols, sprays and fluids.

N95 masks are so called because they are a U.S. standard that requires masks to be able to filter out at least 95% of very small particles, including droplets containing the coronavirus.

Do N95 respirators come in different sizes? Yes. The sizing differs with each respirator model. Some of the sizing options include small, small/medium, medium, medium/large, and large.

N95 respirator refers to an N95 filtering facepiece respirator (FFR) that seals to the face and uses a filter to remove at least 95% of airborne particles from the user’s breathing air. OSHA requires an initial respirator fit test to identify the right model, style, and size respirator for each worker.

Surgical N95 respirators are both approved by NIOSH as an N95 respirator and also cleared by the FDA as a surgical mask. These products are frequently referred to as medical respirators, healthcare respirators, or surgical N95s.

How to identify a NIOSH-approved respirator: NIOSH-approved respirators have an approval label on or within the packaging of the respirator (i.e. on the box itself and/or within the users’ instructions). Additionally, an abbreviated approval is on the FFR itself.

NIOSH approval is issued only to a specific and complete respirator assembly after the respirator has been evaluated in the laboratory and found to comply with all of the requirements of Title 42, Code of Federal Regulations , Part 84, and after the manufacturer’s quality plan is determined to be satisfactory.

Once you obtain a manufacturer code, NIOSH will send you the Standard Application Form to submit a single approval request for a new respirator. All required documentation (including the Quality Manual), test samples and appropriate fees, as detailed in the Standard Application Procedures must be provided.

This process generally takes about three months from submittal to approval. If NIOSH has any simple questions, they may allow the manufacturer a reasonable amount of time to answer those questions. Once the manufacturer receives approval, it can begin to market the respirator.

The N95 respirator is the most common of the seven types of particulate filtering facepiece respirators. This product filters at least 95% of airborne particles but is not resistant to oil. This web page provides a table of NIOSH-approved N95 respirators, listed alphabetically by manufacturer.
