Certain drugs, particularly cannabis, cocaine, LSD or amphetamines, may trigger symptoms of schizophrenia in people who are susceptible. Using amphetamines or cocaine can lead to psychosis, and can cause a relapse in people recovering from an earlier episode.

Kraepelin

Schizophrenia was defined as an early dementia in the 19th century. French psychiatrist, Benedict Augustine Morel (1809–1873), coined the term dementia praecox, or “precocious dementia.” stated that it was a disorder with a specific neuroanatomical pathology and etiology.

Schizophrenia and Jail The vast majority of people with schizophrenia who are in jail have been charged with misdemeanors such as trespassing. The American Psychiatric Association estimated in 2000 that one in five prisoners were seriously mentally ill, with up to 5 percent actively psychotic at any given moment.

Part of the reason is the criminalization of mental illness. Due to the lack of outpatient resources, poor funding, stigma, discrimination, lack of understanding, poor planning, ineffectual policies and denial, the United States has returned to the conditions of the 1840s.

The test was also criticized for being too narrow; like M’Naghten, the test seemed to exclude all but those totally unable to control their actions.
