Look closely at the glaze: if it’s chipped, you will be able to see the tile’s white or tan base. This is a sure sign that the tile is ceramic. Porcelain tiles are sometimes, but not always, glazed. A good quality lot of tile will have tiles that are the same size or extremely close to the same size. It is preferred to have small grout lines. If the tiles vary in size, then it is necessary to have larger grout joints to compensate for the different size tiles.

Wash the surface with a mild detergent, degreaser, or glass cleaning solution (do not use abrasive cleaners or abrasive applicators). Unglazed porcelain tiles should only be cleaned using a mild cleaner to prevent any damage. You can make the same vinegar solution we mentioned above, or use a commercial product safe for unglazed tiles. Wet the floor slightly using a mop and then scrub spots or stains using a small brush.

The trick to cleaning matte tiles is to use a mild solution of water with a very small amount of detergent and some vinegar. In most cases, 1 cup of vinegar and 1 tsp of dish soap to about 4 litres of water should do the trick.

For matte tiles, you can use a mixture of vinegar and water for cleaning or commercial porcelain shower tile cleaner. Spray that solution and wait for 5 to 10 minutes to let it loosen up the dirt. Then use a soft bristle brush to clean up the trash.
