Colonial Period 1607–1776.

The immediate effect of the American Revolution was that the American colonies became a free and independent country. This revolution did not bring about any other huge and immediate changes. This is why many historians argue that it was not a real revolution at all.

The 13 colonies were in America but were controlled by Britain. In order to expand the British Empire against the Spanish rival, Queen Elizabeth of England established colonies in North America. Each colony was founded under different circumstances. Many were established after escaping religious persecution in Europe.

In 1626, the new governor of the colony, Peter Minuit purchased Manhattan Island from the Native Americans for jewelry that was valued at $24. The city of New York was founded there. Governor Stuyvesant wanted to attack the English, but the citizens were unwilling to fight.

The English colonies had much less land and a similar population to the Spaniards. The English colonies had a heavily diverse economy, which varied between the Northern, Middle, and Southern colonies. This allowed for it to sustain during hardships and offered more profit in the long run.
