Haemorrhage was the leading direct cause of maternal death worldwide, representing 27·1% (19·9–36·2) of maternal deaths. More than two thirds of reported haemorrhage deaths were classified as postpartum haemorrhage (table 2). Hypertension was the second most common direct cause worldwide (14·0%, 11·1–17·4).

Background. The three delays model proposes that maternal mortality is associated with delays in: 1) deciding to seek care; 2) reaching the healthcare facility; and 3) receiving care.

Focus on the major delivery complications. Excessive bleeding (hemorrhage) during and after birth, cardiovascular conditions such as high blood pressure (which can be a warning sign for preeclampsia), and sepsis are three of the leading complications that can lead to a woman’s death during or after childbirth.

Prevention. Inconsistent obstetric practice, increase in women with chronic conditions, and lack of maternal health data all contribute to maternal mortality in the United States.

In the Hainan and Henan provinces, maternity leave has been increased to 190 days, in the Heilongjiang and Gansu provinces have essentially increased their periods to 180 days of leave. In Beijing, Shanghai and some other provincial regions, women employees are now allowed to have 128 days off after having given birth.
