World Sparrow Day is celebrated on March 20 every year. It a day to raise awareness and protect the common house sparrows, which are not so commonly seen now due to increasing noise pollution.

World Sparrow Day 2021: Theme The theme for the World Sparrow Day is ‘I Love Sparrows’ and is inspired with the hope that more people will celebrate the relationship between people and sparrows by making them remember the bond they share as people have lived in harmony with these little birds for 10,000 years.

World Sparrow Day-2019 the theme is ‘I Love Sparrows’. The theme has been inspired by the hope that more people will celebrate the relationship between people and sparrows.

The day has a broader vision to provide a platform where people who are working on the conservation of the House Sparrow and other common birds can network, collaborate and exchange conservation ideas which will lead to better science and improved results.

The Old World sparrows are indigenous to Europe, Africa and Asia. In the Americas, Australia, and other parts of the world, settlers imported some species which quickly naturalised, particularly in urban and degraded areas.

With rapid urbanisation resulting in a shrunken habitat, the number of sparrows is falling in towns and cities. Fields and crops are nowhere to be seen near towns today, which is a factor. “Sparrows are insectivores, but they also thrive majorly on grains.

Importance of Sparrow Sparrow plays an important role in environmental balance. Sparrows feed their children with insects called alpha and catworm. These insects are extremely dangerous for crops. They kill the leaves of crops and destroy them.

Keep a bowl of water and some grains for sparrows to feed on. Plant trees in and around your homes to create shelters for them or keep bird feeders outside your house. Do not use chemical insecticides and pesticides in your garden as it is harmful. The only way to bring the sparrow back is by people’s participation.

House Sparrows mainly eat seeds, cracked open by their strong beak. They are opportunists though, readily eating most scraps, and will happily visit bird tables and eat seeds and nuts from feeders. When nesting they feed their chicks mostly insects, including caterpillars, aphids and beetles.
