England and Scotland became Protestant as well. However, most of the rest of Western Europe remained predominantly Catholic. Italy (which, like Germany, was not yet a united country) remained Catholic.

Ultimately the Protestant Reformation led to modern democracy, skepticism, capitalism, individualism, civil rights, and many of the modern values we cherish today. The Protestant Reformation increased literacy throughout Europe and ignited a renewed passion for education.

The Reformation (alternatively named the Protestant Reformation or the European Reformation) was a major movement within Western Christianity in 16th-century Europe that posed a religious and political challenge to the Catholic Church and in particular to papal authority, arising from what were perceived to be errors.

Protestantism: European countries or areas with significant Protestant populations are Denmark, Finland, Germany (central, eastern and northern regions), Great Britain, Iceland, Netherlands (central and northern regions), Northern Ireland, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland (except the southern part).

By 1560 the majority of the nobility supported the rebellion; a provisional government was established, the Scottish Parliament renounced the Pope’s authority, and the mass was declared illegal. Scotland had officially become a Protestant country.

While the United Kingdom’s official religion is Protestant Christianity, the Church of England remains the state church of its largest constituent region, England.

Wearing the Crucifix among the Christian community also varies, among each denomination. For example, whilst Catholics display the Crucifix in their churches and often wear Crucifix’s or carry them for prayer and protection, people of the Protestant faith wear a plain cross.

The original Protestant movement did discard the Catholic tradition of worshiping the saints. This comes from two beliefs. The first belief, and the strongest, is that Protestants believe in a direct connection with God. No priest or saint needs to intervene or intercede with the Holy One.

Although the sign of the cross dates to ante-Nicene Christianity, it was rejected by some of the Reformers and is absent from some forms of Protestantism. Other Protestants and Restorationist Christians do not use it all.

While in excess of a billion Christians observe Lent each year, not all Christians do. It is observed by Anglicans, Roman Catholics, Easter Orthodox, Lutherans, and Methodists. Whole swathes of Protestants don’t observe Lent — Baptists, Evangelicals, Pentecostalists, Latter Day Saints.

God in Christianity is seen as the eternal being who created and preserves all things. Christians believe God to be both transcendent (wholly independent of, and removed from, the material universe) and immanent (involved in the world).

The main differences between Roman Catholics and Catholics are that Roman Catholics form the major Christian group, and Catholics are only a small group of the Christian community, also called as “Greek Orthodox.” It is believed that when Christianity started, only one church was followed.

Protestants reject the Catholic Church’s doctrine that it is the one true church, believing in the invisible church, which consists of all who profess faith in Jesus Christ.

Catholics also follow the teachings of Jesus Christ but do so through the church, whom they consider as the path to Jesus. They believe in the special authority of the Pope which other Christians may not believe in, whereas Christians are free to accept or reject individual teachings and interpretations of the bible.

They convert because Catholicism is an intellectually rich theological tradition better able to negotiate the acids of our culture. They also take seriously that Roman Catholicism represents a commitment to Christian unity, not only toward non-Catholic Christians but between the poor and those who are not poor.
