Troy

The protagonist of Fences, Troy is a responsible man whose thwarted dreams make him prone to believing in self-created illusions. Troy begins the play by entertaining Bono and Rose with an epic story about his struggle with a personified Death, or Devil, character.

Troy Maxson

Wilson’s audience see Troy as a villain because of his actions to proceed with Alberta, knowing that he has a loving and devoted wife with whom he goes home to every night. Troy is also mainly seen as a tragic hero because of his failure to be a good husband to Rose that results in the destruction of his marriage.

When Rose finally finds out about this affair, Troy explains to her that the affair was a way of escaping the pressures of his everyday life—a way to be without the worries of mundane home-related stresses, such as paying the bills and carrying out necessary home maintenance.

Troy went to jail in the play Fences for murder. He accidentally killed a man while attempting to rob him.

Troy has died from a heart attack when he was swinging a bat at the baseball that hangs from a tree in their yard. Cory returns home from the Marines in his uniform. Lyons also comes home to go to the funeral. Cory refuses to attend the funeral because he wants to rebel against Troy.

Rose tells Cory that a big part of the reason she married Troy was because she thought he would make good babies. Although Cory and his father did not get along, Rose insists that they are alike, and here she implies that she approves of the resemblance.

Rose is 10 years younger than Troy. She is devoted to Troy, not so much because of love, but also because she recognizes what her life would be like without him. But she does love him. Troy ruined his marriage with Rose because of an affair he had with another woman names Alberta.

To Rose, a fence is a symbol of her love and her desire for a fence indicates that Rose represents love and nurturing. Troy and Cory on the other hand think the fence is a drag and reluctantly work on finishing Rose’s project. Bono also observes that to some people, fences keep people out and push people away.

Rose Maxson Character Analysis. Wife to Troy and mother of Cory, Rose represents the maternal gentleness of the Maxson household. In opposition to Troy’s toughness and disrespect for Cory’s feelings and opinions, Rose is a source of love and understanding.

In August Wilson’s play Fences, Troy is both a good and bad father. Troy is a good father because he takes care of his family, financially.

Because of his combative nature, Troy assumes the fence is meant to keep something out. It takes Bono to make Troy see that a fence can have the opposite effect. It’s possible that Rose asked Troy and Cory to build the fence as attempt to help the two to bond.

Follow your dreams. And when this is not an option, make the next best choice. Never ruin your life because another person is trying so hard to do so. Troy refused to sign his son’s (Cory) form to go to college and play football. He later became a Marine whilst still despising his father.

What is ironic about the way Troy died? He built the fence to keep death from getting him. But death crossed that and took him.

Troy is a hypocrite. He is so much of the idea that his loved ones, his wife, and children, live the life that is practical and responsible. This is quite contradictive since he affords for himself to have an extramarital affair. He is also a rebel against racists’ practices of his employers.

In Fences, the antagonist is Troy’s behavior. He tires to make his life better for himself and his family but his human failings get in the way.

Troy, however, is dead-set against Cory going off to play football. One of the greatest sources of disappointment in Troy’s life is the fact that he wasn’t allowed to play pro baseball. Though he was a homerun king of the N**** Leagues, he couldn’t graduate to the majors because of racial discrimination.

troy can’t face the truth about the changing world because he himself has been stuck in the same routine for 18 years.
