Portugal

On 21 May 1662, the marriage treaty of Charles II of England and Catherine of Braganza, daughter of King John IV of Portugal, placed Bombay in possession of the British Empire, as part of dowry of Catherine to Charles.

The English East India company acquired Bombay and named it Bombay Presidency when King of England, Charles II acquired as part of his dowry from Portugal on his marriage to the Portuguese Queen Catherine in 1661.

Bombaim

On 18 January 1665, King Charles granted Humphrey Cooke the possession of Bombay. On 21 September 1668, the Royal Charter of 27 March 1668, led to the transfer of Bombay from Charles II to the English East India Company for an annual rent of £10.

On 1 May 1960, Bombay State was dissolved and split on linguistic lines into the two states of Gujarat, with Gujarati speaking population and Maharashtra, with Marathi speaking population.

The Gujarat was known as ‘Anarchant’ (Land in West) during Mahabharat period. Before 6th century this region was known as Surat, Saurashtra and Kathiawad,Later on it was known as ‘Gujjar Pradesh’ (Land of Gurjar). From the word ‘Gurjar Pradesh’GurjaratraThe name Gujarat has come from Gurjarata.

The Sanyukta Maharashtra Samiti was leading the movement to divide Bombay state into two states — one where people primarily spoke Gujarati and Kutchhi. And the other where people primarily spoke Marathi and Konkani.

When the right-wing Hindu nationalist party Shiv Sena came to power they ordered the name change. This was because Bombay was associated with the British Raj or Empire – and it was viewed it has a unwanted legacy of the colonial period.

MUMBAI

Maharashtra was historically the name of a region which consisted of Aparanta, Vidarbha, Mulak, Assaka (Asmaka) and Kuntala. Tribal communities of Bhil people inhabited this area, also known as Dandakaranya, in ancient times.

King Bhimdev founded his kingdom in the region in the late 13th century and established his capital in Mahikawati (present day Mahim). He belonged to either the Yadava dynasty of Devagiri in Maharashtra or the Anahilavada dynasty of Gujarat.

The name Mumbai is derived from Mumbā or Mahā-Ambā—the name of the patron goddess (kuladevata) Mumbadevi of the native Koli community— and ā’ī meaning “mother” in the Marathi language, which is the mother tongue of the Koli people and the official language of Maharashtra.
