One of the most pressing challenges African states faced at Independence was their lack of infrastructure. European imperialists prided themselves on bringing civilization and developing Africa, but they left their former colonies with little in the way of infrastructure.

The causes of ethnic conflict in Belgium were as follows:

• During 1950s and 1960s the social disparity between Dutch and French speaking communities.
• The Minority French speaking community was very rich and Powerful.
• The Dutch community got the benefit of economic development in education much later.

Why was it more acute in Brussels ? Ans. The minority French-speaking community was relatively rich and powerful. The conflict between the two communities was more severe in Brussels because the Dutch speaking people constituted a majority in the country, but a minority in the capital.

The french speaking community although being a minority were relatively rich and powerful. Dutch people got the benefit of development much later. And this led to the tensions between dutch and french speaking . And these were reasons behind the disturbances in Belgium.

Belgium solved the majoritarian problem by 1) Establishing a Neighborhood Government 2) Independent Brussels Government 3) Equivalent number of ministers at the center and state level. Belgium accommodated the varied community by creating an structure geared to the needs of various cultures.
