Lake Michigan, third largest of the five Great Lakes of North America and the only one lying wholly within the United States. In recent years, severe pollution and other problems have drawn attention to Lake St. Clair, a groundswell of local activism to the threats it faces. Urban sprawl, sewer overflows and invasive species have severely affected the lake.

Clair in recent weeks – the water is turning blue. The drought conditions of the past three months have meant no polluted sewage-system overflows into the lake, which turn the waterfront a murky brown in the spring and summer. As a result, after a series of sewer discharges in March generated by rainstorms, Lake St.

Clair offers clear blue water, with lots of shallow areas with no weeds and hard bottoms to hang out with other boaters. Many areas shown on the Lake St.

Now Lake St Clair is getting a reputation as a hiker’s dream. Walking tracks criss-cross the surrounding forest, and it’s right next door to the equally stunning Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park.

Belle Isle is home to a half-mile long swimming beach that provides a great escape on hot summer days. Located on the west side of the island this beach provides a safe swimming area away from the currents of the Detroit River. The beach is well manicured with clear water and sandy bottom.

Lake St. Clair is continuously being polluted by storm water runoff and sewage since the early 2000’s according to the Detroit Free Press. Clair, Oakland, and Macomb, drainage systems lead to the lake. Sewage from households and businesses in those counties are dumped in there along with contaminants from runoff.

Clair has many calm bays where you may water ski & tube with the family along with several transient marinas with a pool.

The swimming area at Lake St. Clair Metropark, formerly known as Metro Beach, was above safe bacteria counts in 13 of 51 samples. And the New Baltimore beach exceeded EPA levels in 12 of 48 samples.

Throughout 2018, the Lake St. Clair Metropark Beach was closed only four times due to contamination in the water, and on only two occasions during the swim season from Memorial Day to Labor Day. We strive to keep all of our amenities, parks and experiences safe and accessible to visitors.

Is it safe to swim in the Clinton River? In a word, no, the areas of the river inland of the Red Run drain (near Mt. Clemens) are less dangerous than those on the on the other side of the confluence.

Guide dogs and assistance dogs are permitted in all areas. No person shall ride or lead any horse within the boundaries of any park, except in areas designated by the Metroparks and in possession of a Metroparks bridle tag.

Pets are allowed at the park but not on the trails except for the designated 1.2 mile Pet Trail called the Goldenrod Trail. Pets must be on leash, under control and cleaned up after.
