Officials surmised that he likely wandered off the path he intended to take on a day when triple-digit heat was in the forecast. Kreycik was found in the northern end of the park, in proximity to a trail forged by animals.

Kreycik, 37, of Berkeley, was on a trail run when he disappeared July 10, setting off a massive search effort by the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office and hundreds of volunteers. An autopsy has not been completed yet, but GPS data from his smartwatch is helping investigators piece together what went wrong during Kreycik’s final run.

Kreycik, who left his phone in his car at the Moller Ranch Staging Area on July 10 when he set out for what he told his wife would be a one-hour hike, appears to have started his trail run strong, at one point hitting at a top speed of nearly 12 miles per hour — a roughly 5-minute mile pace.

It was a Suunto brand smartwatch, with GPS capabilities, though it did not track biometric data, such as his heartbeat. Kelly said Kreycik traversed a total of 9.62 kilometers, or roughly six miles.
