Sarajevo became known for its large marketplace and numerous mosques, which by the middle of the 16th century numbered more than 100. At the peak of the empire, Sarajevo was the biggest and most important Ottoman city in the Balkans after Istanbul.

Crime. The level of crime is generally low, and crime against foreigners is particularly low, but you should beware of pickpockets on public transport, and in the tourist and pedestrian areas of Sarajevo and other cities. Be vigilant and make sure personal belongings including your passports are secure.

If you decide to pet the dogs or cats, just be sure to wash your hands afterwards; you’ll notice that almost any animal seems to be in search of some love! Typically, Bosnians are more aggressive towards animals, shooing them away or kicking them if they get too close.

Sarajevo is notorious for having petty street crime, unlike other cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. And while the city isn’t particularly dangerous for tourists when it comes to violent street crime, you should be careful when you cross the street since Bosnian drivers speed and don’t pay any mind to pedestrians.

Per current U.S. government regulations, any person who has travelled across international borders in the last 14 days is barred entry to U.S. Embassy Sarajevo. Travel from Croatia, Serbia, or Montenegro by private vehicle is excepted.

It is very much worth visiting. It is very tourist friendly. They have a helpful tourist office by the river and the tourist office runs informative walking tours and bus tours out to the tunnel museum. Sarajevo has interesting churches, mosques, and museums, and good cafes and nightlife.

Entry and Exit Requirements Starting December 20, 2020 the Government of Serbia is reporting that foreigners seeking to enter Serbia, U.S. citizens included, will need to provide a negative PCR test, not older than 48 hours.

Exercise increased caution in Bosnia and Herzegovina due to COVID-19, terrorism, and land mines. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 2 Travel Health Notice for Bosnia and Herzegovina due to COVID-19, indicating a moderate level of COVID-19 in the country.

Despite its small size, however, about 18.56 percent, or 640,000 people, live in absolute poverty in Bosnia. Aside from the nearly one-fifth of the population already in poverty, approximately 50 percent of the country is vulnerable to becoming poor.

The official languages in Bosnia and Herzegovina are Bosnian, Serbian and Croatian, all three known as Serbo-Croatian as they are practically the same language. Many Bosnians speak English, as well as German owing to family connections as well tourism in former Yugoslavia before the war.

‘Burek’ (a pastry with a savoury filling – usually beef) and ‘ćevapi’ (a minced meat dish) are typical foods in Bosnian households. Consider that some Muslims may not eat pork. However, many Bosnian Muslims still drink alcohol and smoke. Rakija (brandy) is drunk and enjoyed by most.
