A bibliography is a list of the sources you used to get information for your report. It is included at the end of your report, on the last page (or last few pages).

It appears at the end of your paper and gives full details of every source you cited. In notes and bibliography style, you use Chicago style footnotes to cite sources; a bibliography is optional but recommended. If you don’t include one, be sure to use a full note for the first citation of each source.

In general, a bibliography should include:

1. the authors’ names.
2. the titles of the works.
3. the names and locations of the companies that published your copies of the sources.
4. the dates your copies were published.
5. the page numbers of your sources (if they are part of multi-source volumes)

There are some basic bibliography rules you’ll follow across the board.

• Start on a separate page. This will be after your endnotes, if applicable.
• Center the title at the top of the page.
• Alphabetize the author’s names.
• Left-align the citations.
• Use a hanging indent for any citations that go over one line.

Sample Bibliography: APA. The basic format for a book citation requires listing the author’s name, the title of the book, the publisher’s name, and the date of publication. Edited books, when cited in full, will list the editor’s name instead of an author’s name.

One of the reasons behind citing sources and compiling an extensive and logical bibliography is to prove that you have done some valid research to back up your logic and claims. The bibliography is the key element of a thesis which is used to judge the quality of the work done by the researcher.

In general, the list of references is double-spaced and listed alphabetically by first author’s last name. For each reference, the first line is typed flush with the left margin, and any additional lines are indented as a group a few spaces to the right of the left margin (this is called a hanging indent).
