Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm included “Hansel and Gretel” in the first volume of Kinder- und Hausmärchen, which English-speaking audiences now know as Grimms’ Fairy Tales. According to the brothers, the story comes from Hesse, the region in Germany in which they lived.

Though the novel is called The True Story of Hansel and Gretel, it is also the story of the father and stepmother, of Magda and her brother, and of the entire village of Piaski.

Gretel & Hansel 2 Isn’t Confirmed (Yet) That said, director Oz Perkins’ film only cost around $5 million to produce, and is pretty certain to at least make that back soon.

Perkins explained in an interview that the title was changed because this version focuses on Gretel: “It’s awfully faithful to the original story. It’s got really only three principal characters: Hansel, Gretel, and the Witch. We tried to find a way to make it more of a coming of age story.

The witch forces Hansel to continuously eat candy to fatten him up, and enslaves Gretel by ordering her to prepare the oven. The siblings outsmart her and incinerate her in the fire of the oven. In the fifteen years that follow, Hansel and Gretel become famed witch hunters, slaying hundreds of witches.

Hansel, played by Jeremy Renner, has grown into an adult “witch hunter” with a “sugar sickness” caused by eating too much candy as a child. In between fights, he needs to inject insulin to bring his blood sugar down.

“A diabetic-style shoe is characterized by being made of soft leather, has a deep toe box, has a rounder, wider toe box that can accommodate things like hammertoes and bunions,” Giurini says. Experts also mentioned jogging shoes or walking shoes as good alternatives.

Hansel (Jeremy Renner) has diabetes. This is not a throwaway character trait, not a bit of bizarre nuance in a quasi-steampunk re-imagining of a Grimm fairy tale.
