Mona was Ross’ recurring girlfriend in season 8. She was portrayed by Bonnie Somerville. Mona and Ross began their relationship just as Ross learned that Rachel was pregnant with his child. However, when Ross asked Rachel to move in with him because of the baby, Mona broke up with him.

Though known as Monica’s apartment, the apartment actually belongs to Ross and Monica’s grandmother, for whom the apartment was rent-controlled.

Monica’s grandmother is the official tenant and lived there before Monica . After she moved to Florida, Monica stayed in the apartment, sub-letting the apartment illegally (this also covers the fact that Monica could afford such an expensive apartment with her chef’s salary);

It was possibly because the balcony was an afterthought of the set designers and the wall with the small window had already been made. Alternatively the balcony wasn’t designed for sitting in as after the first season, the balcony is much smaller with only room for someone to stand.
