While you may not be able to find the black hole while stargazing from your backyard, skywatchers in the Southern Hemisphere can see the stars in the HR 6819 system in the night sky without the help of binoculars or a telescope.

For a comparison, Sagittarius A, the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, is thought to be about 4 million times the mass of the sun. In addition to being among the smallest black holes ever seen, it’s the nearest one to us that we know of, at just 1,500 light years away.

A dim object less than 10 light years from Earth appears to be the closest brown dwarf yet found. The “star” is so cold that any residents on an orbiting planet would see a dark sun in their starry “daytime” sky. The discovery suggests that brown dwarfs are common and that the objects could exist even closer to Earth.

Astronomers have apparently found the closest known black hole to Earth, a weirdly tiny object dubbed “The Unicorn” that lurks just 1,500 light-years from us. The nickname has a double meaning.

For comparison, the sun cruises at only 44,740 mph. Astronomers think they achieved their breakneck pace when the black hole was created by an asymmetric supernova, which gave the system a kick. Paired with an evolved F-type star that’s two times as massive as our sun. The star and black hole are locked in an orbit every 2.6 days.
