Use Guidelines. Chemical Safety’s SDS and GHS database is a free service available to organizations of all types. For-profit organizations are granted permission to access Chemical Safety’s SDS Search from Chemical Safety’s website.

To obtain SDS, get them from the manufacturer.

1. They may be sent with the chemical order (paper copy or e-mail attachment).
2. Otherwise, go to the manufacturer’s website and download it or request a copy.

The Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) (29 CFR 1910.1200(g)), revised in 2012, requires that the chemical manufacturer, distributor, or importer provide Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) (formerly MSDSs or Material Safety Data Sheets) for each hazardous chemical to downstream users to communicate information on these hazards.

A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is a document that contains information on the potential hazards (health, fire, reactivity and environmental) and how to work safely with the chemical product. It is an essential starting point for the development of a complete health and safety program.

Inhalation May be harmful if inhaled. May cause respiratory tract irritation. May be harmful if absorbed through skin. May cause skin irritation.

The Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) requires chemical manufacturers, distributors, or importers to provide Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) (formerly known as Material Safety Data Sheets or MSDSs) to communicate the hazards of hazardous chemical products.

If you are using a 9-section MSDS, the types of information may be in a different order and under slightly different headings.

• Composition, Information on Ingredients.
• First Aid Measures.
• Fire Fighting Measures.
• Accidental Release Measures.
• Handling And Storage.

The 16 sections are:

• SECTION 1: Identification of the substance/mixture and of the company/undertaking.
• SECTION 2: Hazards identification.
• SECTION 3: Composition/information on ingredients.
• SECTION 4: First aid measures.
• SECTION 5: Firefighting measures.
• SECTION 6: Accidental release measure.
• SECTION 7: Handling and storage.

Preparation of PEI Stocks

1. Dissolve 100 mg in 100 mL sterile ddH2O.
2. Stir while slowly adding HCl to pH 7.0.
3. Mix for 10 minutes and then recheck pH.
4. Filter sterilize through 0.22 um filter.
5. Aliquot 500 uL to 1000 uL and store in -80C.
6. Thawed solution can be stored at 4C for up to 2 months, label a tube when thawed.

A manufacturer, importer, supplier, or employer shall check the accuracy of a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) based on the actual circumstances and update it as needed. A Safety Data Sheet shall be reviewed at least every 3 years. Records of SDS updates such as content, date, and version revision, shall be kept for 3 years.

Another change, thanks to GHS, is the renaming of material safety data sheets from MSDSs to simply safety data sheets, or SDSs.
