Lakes cover about 4 percent of the Earth’s land surface. Many of the largest ones (by area) are salty: Utah’s Great Salt Lake, the Caspian Sea (arguably the world’s biggest lake), Iran’s Lake Urmia, and the Dead Sea. Unlike marine and brackish waters, saline lakes typically form inland, and do not connect to the ocean.

It may be small, but of all the world’s lakes that are hypersaline (extremely high in their salt content) Don Juan Pond in Antarctica is the saltiest. With more than 40 percent salinity, the lake never freezes — even at temperatures as low as -22 degrees Fahrenheit.

Great Salt Lake Boating Great Salt Lake is definitely a worthwhile boating destination. There is no fuel on the lake and the causeway is nearly seven miles long, so fuel up. Great Salt Lake State Park Marina offers a well-developed marina with water, electricity, and a pump-out station.

Today, no one talks much about the whales of Great Salt Lake. The animals live in the deepest sections of water, far from shore, and they mainly keep to themselves. But, they’re there. While unlikely, you may be able to catch a glimpse of a breaching whale from the shore of Great Salt Lake.

With an average water temperature of 75 degrees, Utah Lake provides an excellent outlet for swimming, boating, and paddleboarding.

PROVO, Utah — Health officials have issued a harmful algal bloom warning for Utah Lake’s Provo Bay. Although algae occurs naturally in bodies of water, large amonts of cyanobacteria can create harmful algal blooms (HABs). They are often detected in Utah Lake and other bodies of water during the summer.

It’s the Law! Each motorboat and personal watercraft (PWC) are required to carry the owner’s or operator’s liability insurance when operated on Utah waters. The minimum insurance requirements are: $25,00-/$50,000 bodily injury/death – $15,000 property damage or $65,000 combined minimum per accident.
