The major areas of tropical rainforests are in South East Asia, West Africa and South and Central America. The best known rain forests are found in tropical regions between the Tropics of cancer and Capricorn.

Brazil

Around 2 million km² of Africa is covered by tropical rainforests. They are second only in extent to those in Amazonia, which cover around 6 million km². Rainforests are home to vast numbers of species.

Others believe that the African continent is a huge steaming jungle or rainforest. In fact only a small percentage of Africa, along the Guinea Coast and in the Zaire River Basin, are rainforests. The largest vegetation zone in Africa is tropical grassland, known as savanna.

Tigers as we know them, you see, have never lived in the wild in Africa. Lions, leopards and tigers are all part of the Felidae family of cats, which originated in Africa and share a common ancestor.

Most tigers will only attack a human if they cannot physically satisfy their needs otherwise. Tigers are typically wary of humans and usually show no preference for human meat. In some cases, rather than being predatory, tiger attacks on humans seem to be territorial in nature.

India

Wild tigers live in Asia. Larger subspecies, such as the Siberian tiger, tend to live in northern, colder areas, such as eastern Russia and northeastern China. Smaller subspecies live in southern, warmer countries, such as India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia.

No. Tigers don’t live and have never lived in Africa. If tigers did live in Africa it would result in a tense atmosphere for the other cats, who already have to tussle and jostle for their prey.

In recent centuries there are almost no opportunities for tigers and lions to cross paths in the wild because tigers are found in Asia while Lions are found in Africa except for a very small population in one area in Asia.

Why are there no native bears in Africa? Because they are now extinct. There was just one species of bear native to Africa in modern wildlife times, it was called the Atlas bear, and it was believed to be a subspecies of brown bear (currently living in Europe, Asia and North America).

Though one might suppose that a brown bear would be far too large to mate with a dog, there is a very wide range of geographic variation in the adult size of these animals. It does seem, then, that some bears would be within the size range that would allow mating with a large dog, such as a mastiff.

African lions used to be spread across most of the continent, but now are only found in sub-Saharan Africa, with 80% in eastern or southern Africa. Three of the five largest populations are in Tanzania. Lions have disappeared from 12 sub-Saharan countries in recent decades.

All lions face high mortality as cubs, for a variety of reasons, including injuries, lack of food, illness and being killed by adult lions — more on that later. But when male lions begin to reach sexual maturity around age 2, the older males within the pride kick them out, Dereck said.

Lions are currently listed as “vulnerable” on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. In some parts of Africa, lions are classified as “critically endangered” because lion populations are still plummeting at an unprecedented rate.

Do lions have predators? No predators hunt lions to eat them; however, they do have a few natural enemies, such as hyenas and cheetahs.
