Under the new vehicle importation guidelines, all motor vehicles less than 25 years old must comply with FMVSS safety standards in order to be eligible for use in the United States. In other words, you can now technically import a Nissan Skyline R34 and make it road-legal in the USA.

The reason a Skyline is illegal is because of NHTSA, DOT, and EPA regulations. There are a few R32’s and R34’s that were made compliant by MOTOR-EX in the late 90’s early 2000’s, but the company was shut down for not performing the necessary modifications on the cars. They were also expensive.

In 1998, the NHTSA granted immunity for import vehicles over 25 years of age. That means you can now import any Nissan Skyline that was built in or before 1995, despite it failing to meet regulations. The only place you may run into trouble is in California.

There are other costs in addition to the price of the car. There is a cost of $5,500 for export and import to the US.

Supply and demand. Nissan GTRs are a one-of-a-kind product for Nissan muscle cars that creates a steep price premium with each uniquely crafted design. Labor, time and especially engineering are what command a high premium for the Nissan GTRs.

As time marches on, age takes its toll on the Skyline fleet. Some are left to rot away, some suffer mechanical failure that is not affordable for the owner to fix, others are crashed. Basically, as the “population” of Skylines decreases (but the demand grows – or even stays the same!) the price inherently increases.

One of the key reasons that the GTR came to be known as Godzilla is due to the fact that it was so dominant in Motorsport, particularly the R32 generation.
