Easter Island covers roughly 64 square miles in the South Pacific Ocean, and is located some 2,300 miles from Chile’s west coast and 2,500 miles east of Tahiti.

Known as Rapa Nui to its earliest inhabitants, the island was christened Paaseiland, or Easter Island, by Dutch explorers in honor of the day of their arrival in 1722. It was annexed by Chile in the late 19th century and now maintains an economy based largely on tourism.

Despite being located at the eastern edge of the Polynesian Triangle and a whopping 3,526 km from the nearest continental mass (the coast of Chile)—making it one of the most isolated human settlements in the world—people do live on Easter Island these days.

Early Settlement. The first human inhabitants of Rapa Nui (the Polynesian name for Easter Island; its Spanish name is Isla de Pascua) are believed to have arrived in an organized party of emigrants.

Easter Island was covered with palm trees for over 30,000 years, but is treeless today. There is good evidence that the trees largely disappeared between 1200 and 1650.

In most European languages the feast is called by the words for passover in those languages; and in the older English versions of the Bible the term Easter was the term used to translate passover.

El nombre de Isla de Pascua le fue dado por el navegante neerlandés Jakob Roggeveen, que en un largo viaje iniciado en Texel y tras navegar por las costas chilenas, la descubrió el 5 de abril de 1722, fecha correspondiente al día de Pascua de Resurrección.

De acuerdo con la información del Museo Antropológico de Isla de Pascua hay tres etapas de poblamiento de la isla de Pascua: Poblamiento temprano: Poblamiento entre los años 400 y 1200, en que construyen los centros ceremoniales ahu con o sin moái. Estudios recientes descartan la existencia de este periodo.
