Universal male suffrage was re-established in France in the wake of the French Revolution of 1848. In the United States, the rise of Jacksonian democracy from the 1820s to 1850s led to a close approximation of universal manhood suffrage among white people being adopted in all states by 1856.

The term has nothing to do with suffering but instead derives from the Latin word “suffragium,” meaning the right or privilege to vote. During the woman suffrage movement in the United States, “suffragists” were anyone—male or female—who supported extending the right to vote (suffrage) to women.

Universal suffrage, with voting rights for women (though not for those under 30), did not arrive in Britain until February 1918. By the time of the third Reform Act in 1884, Britain was less democratic than many other countries in Europe.

Suffrage, political franchise, or simply franchise is the right to vote in public, political elections (although the term is sometimes used for any right to vote). The combination of active and passive suffrage is sometimes called full suffrage. Suffrage is often conceived in terms of elections for representatives.

A suffragist could be a man or woman who believed in extending the right to vote, also known as suffrage (which comes from a Latin word for prayers said after a departed soul; the word broadened to refer to a vote cast in favor of someone and eventually the privilege or right voting in general).

Now widely used to define a woman who fought for her right to vote, suffragette was originally hurled as a sexist insult. The label implied that the movement for women’s suffrage was “not genuine” or “to be ridiculed,” historian Nancy Rohr wrote, per TIME.

During the Civil War, reformers focused on the war effort rather than organizing women’s rights meetings. Many activists supported the abolition of slavery, so they rallied to ensure that the war would end this inhumane practice. Women’s rights activists also were part of the United States Sanitary Commission.

What effect did WW1 have on the suffragist movement? They stopped campaigning for the right to vote and started to help contribute to the war effort by working in munitions factories.

The lives of women changed dramatically during the American Civil War. On the home front, women for both sides had to manage the household while their husbands and sons were off fighting battles. On the battlefield, women helped to supply the soldiers, provide medical care, and worked as spies.

The movement was put on hold while women focused on anti-slavery reform and the war effort. C. The movement was strengthened during the Civil War because women had more time to work on it.

Although the inherently clandestine nature of the activity makes an accurate count impossible, conservative estimates of female soldiers in the Civil War puts the number somewhere between 400 and 750.
