1.1 Origins and Functions. Dictatorship was probably introduced into the constitutional order of the Roman Republic at the beginning of the fifth century BC, soon after the end of the monarchy. Today, the original interpretation of dictatorship as attributed to the survival of the monarchy tradition has been abandoned.

Many historians consider Napoleon Bonaparte to be the first modern dictator. Napoleon was a general during the French Revolution, a period of huge social and political upheaval in the country. Beginning in 1789, France evolved from a monarchy to a republic, and then to an empire.

The term dictatorship comes from the Latin title dictator, which in the Roman Republic designated a temporary magistrate who was granted extraordinary powers in order to deal with state crises.

During the first 300 years of the Republic, dictators were often called on when Rome faced an invasion or some internal danger. He bypassed the Senate, which was filled with his enemies, and convinced the citizens’ assembly to make him a permanent dictator. Sulla then banished or killed hundreds of his opponents.

The reason of why ” Rome ” was cancelled is mainly economic. Even if it was a success, it was also very expensive for HBO to produce it.

The Romans were a lot more disciplined and trained to fight as a unit which made them quite a formidable force. The Vikings have size and strength but remember the romans were equally as strong. Between battles roman soldiers were builders and engineers.

So the Romans were there around 1.500 years before there were Vikings. The Viking age lasted four hundred years from 700 to 1100AD, and the Roman era lasted for one to two thousand years from 550BC to 450 and to 1450AD.
