Haw Par Villa/Opened

SINGAPORE – Popular local attraction Haw Par Villa reopened on Thursday (July 1), after a nine-month closure for upgrading. The theme park in Pasir Panjang was closed in October last year for works that included enhanced night lighting, and ventilation for the 10 Courts of Hell diorama.

Haw Par Villa can be reached from the Haw Par Villa MRT station on the green line. The park is open daily from 9am-6pm and admission is free.

The original garden was located in Hong Kong but is now closed. The second is in Singapore, and a third is in Fujian province of Mainland China. The gardens contain statues and dioramas depicting scenes from Chinese folklore, legends, history and illustrations of various aspects of Confucianism.

Too many pets will also deter visitors from going there if the place is observed as un-clean. So unless ALL pet owners are willing to clean up after their pets, I think it is a good policy for Haw Par Villa not to allow pets. Besides there are plenty of open spaces in Singapore where you can take your pet for a walk.

Located on a hill in Pasir Panjang, Haw Par Villa was once known as Tiger Balm Gardens. Lovingly built by Myanmar-born businessman Aw Boon Haw for his brother, Aw Boon Par, the park was named after the Tiger Balm medical ointment that the siblings’ father had created.

Haw Par Villa – formerly known as the Tiger Balm Garden – is an 8.5-hectare Asian cultural park, the last of its kind in the world. Built in 1937, Singapore’s largest outdoor art gallery is the brainchild of Aw Boon Haw, the millionaire philanthropist and marketing extraordinaire who gifted the world Tiger Balm.

In 1988, Singapore Tourism Board took charge of the Tiger Balm Gardens and renamed it “Haw Par Villa Dragon World”. The Haw Par in the park’s name is based on the Aw brothers’ personal names— Haw and Par, which mean “tiger” and “leopard” respectively.

Rolling hills and caves evoke contemplation and reflection. Elsewhere in the park, animals of all shapes and sizes beckon: goats, pandas, rabbits, gorillas, giant lobsters, even a crab-lady, the list goes on. Here – use this map – it will show you the way around the park.

Haw Par Villa announced on Facebook on Jun. 25 that Hell’s Museum will open on Oct. 28.
