In 1968, the government of Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau initiated negotiations with the People’s Republic of China that led to the establishment of diplomatic relations on October 13, 1970. Canada and China established resident diplomatic missions in 1971.

The name Formosa (福爾摩沙) dates from 1542, when Portuguese sailors sighted an uncharted island and noted it on their maps as Ilha Formosa (“beautiful island”). The name Formosa eventually “replaced all others in European literature” and remained in common use among English speakers into the 20th century.

It is a political decision that needs to be made by the membership of the World Health Assembly. So long as there is no diplomatic agreement among the governments of the world, namely between China and Taiwan’s supporters in the West, Taiwan cannot participate in the WHA.

The two countries that are not UN members are Vatican City (Holy See) and Palestine. Both are considered non-member states of the United Nations, allow them to participate as permanent observers of the General Assembly, and are provided access to UN documents.

Pakistan was one of the first countries that recognized the People’s Republic of China. Over the years, the relationship has blossomed into an “All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership”.

The legacy of Chinese immigration is prevalent throughout the Vancouver area. Chinese Canadians have been a presence in Vancouver since its 1886 incorporation. Shifts in the economy of smaller towns in British Columbia and immigration caused the size of Vancouver’s ethnic Chinese community to increase.

The main exports from Taiwan to Canada were mobile devices, recording equipment, boilers, steel products, and plastic products. In 2018, the balance of trade between Taiwan and Canada in 2018 was 47.9 billion in favour of the Taiwanese.

Electronics industry is the largest industrial export sector and it receives the most US investment.

The top export categories (2-digit HS) in 2019 were: machinery ($5.6 billion); mineral fuels ($4.5 billion); electrical machinery ($4.5 billion); aircraft ($2.7 billion); and optical and medical instruments ($2.2 billion).

The components of major computer brands are manufactured in the country, and computer names like HTC, Acer, Asus and MSI are Taiwanese. Foxconn, the electronics manufacturer with a market capitalization of more than $117 billion and most recognized for its partnership with Apple, is Taiwan-based.

The company was incorporated in Hong Kong in 1988 and would grow to be the largest PC company in China. Legend Holdings changed its name to Lenovo in 2004 and, in 2005, acquired the former Personal Computer Division of IBM, the company that invented the PC industry in 1981.

Hewlett-Packard Company, American manufacturer of software and computer services. The company split in 2015 into two companies: HP Inc. and Hewlett Packard Enterprise. Headquarters were in Palo Alto, California.
