We issue a Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) to all permanent residents as proof that they are authorized to live and work in the United States. If you are a permanent resident age 18 or older, you are required to have a valid Green Card in your possession at all times.

This means only green card holders who are visiting Mexico as tourists can go without a visa. It is valid for up to 180 days and will allow you to stay in Mexico for the given time. If you obtained your green card through marriage to a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, a divorce (or annulment) may pose a problem. The good news is that there is nothing in the law saying that, once you are divorced or your marriage is annulled, your efforts to get a green card are automatically over.

The green card immigration status allows you to live and work in the U.S. indefinitely. However, it is possible to be deported. Each year the U.S. deports thousands of lawful permanent residents, 10 percent of all people deported. Many are deported for committing minor, nonviolent crimes.

Individuals found to have entered the U.S. illegally or those who have overstayed their visas may be deported through the expedited removal process. Expedited removal orders can’t be appealed to a judge, but individuals can claim the orders were improperly issued and ask the government to review and dismiss them.

If you were ordered removed (or deported) from the U.S., you must remain outside of the country for either five, ten, or 20 years. However, some deportees can return to the U.S. on a visa even before their required time outside the country expires.

Although rare, it is possible for a naturalized U.S. citizen to have their citizenship stripped through a process called “denaturalization.” Former citizens who are denaturalized are subject to removal (deportation) from the United States.
