— A navigation timing error sent NASA’s little Mars helicopter on a wild, lurching ride, its first major problem since it took to the Martian skies last month. The experimental helicopter, named Ingenuity, managed to land safely, officials at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory reported Thursday.

On September 14, 1939, the VS-300, the world’s first practical helicopter, took flight at Stratford, Connecticut. Designed by Igor Sikorsky and built by the Vought-Sikorsky Aircraft Division of the United Aircraft Corporation, the helicopter was the first to incorporate a single main rotor and tail rotor design.

NASA’s Mars helicopter Ingenuity is the first aircraft ever to fly on the Red Planet. It launched to the red world in the summer of 2020 on NASA’s Perseverance rover as part of the agency’s Mars 2020 mission. They landed together on Feb.

Because helicopters don’t have air stored on board – they can’t fly in a vacuum where there is no air…and of course, rockets don’t have that problem. HOWEVER, with helicopters, there is another part to the story.

The atmosphere on Mars is about 1 percent as dense as Earth’s atmosphere. That means to fly a kite on Mars, the wind would need to blow much faster than on Earth to get the kite in the air.

The dust in fact gives Mars its warm color, making it the Red Planet. Mars dust forms by the weathering of rocks over long periods of time. This happens as winds, including dust devils, blow around sand and loose particles.
