For the entirety of 2018, Harley-Davidson sold 132,868 bikes domestically, a 10.2 percent dip from a year ago, when it sold 147,972 motorcycles. International sales dropped 2.6 percent to 18,462 from 18,947 for the quarter, leading to a worldwide sales decline of 6.7 percent.

Harley-Davidson’s first quarter effective tax rate was 24.9 percent compared to 24.1 percent in 2018. For the full-year 2019, the company continues to expect: Motorcycle shipments to be approximately 217,000 to 222,000 motorcycles.

Harley-Davidson recently reported a 39% increase in net income in the third quarter of 2020, compared to the same period in 2019, even though its global retail motorcycle sales in the third quarter of 2020 were down 8% compared to the prior year.

Retail sales in the United States – the company’s biggest market – fell for the 16th straight quarter, resulting in an 8 percentage-point decline in big-motorcycle market share. The decline comes at a time when motorcycle sales have gone up on the back of a demand for socially distanced recreational outdoor activity.

Harley-Davidson has been building motorcycles since 1903. The country’s largest motorcycle manufacturer recently announced that it will be eliminating 700 jobs worldwide and that 500 employees will be out of work by the end of 2020, reflecting a 14 percent overall workforce reduction.

Yet it’s appalling just how many Harley-Davidson has fallen into in the last few years. In 2018, nearly 239,000 bikes had to be recalled over a clutch defect, which cost the company $35 million. In 2019, production of the Street had to be stopped when 44,000 were recalled over faulty braking.
