Metro began building its rail system in 1969, acquired four regional bus systems in 1973, and began operating the first phase of Metrorail in 1976. Today, Metrorail serves 91 stations and has 117 miles of track. Metrobus serves the nation’s capital 24 hours a day, seven days a week with 1,500 buses.

Transit researcher Alon Levy estimates the rest of the developed world typically builds underground subways for about $350 million per mile. Even the cheapest U.S. project in recent years, Seattle’s U-Link, cost nearly double the average in other countries, at $600 million per mile.

There are several different methods of building underground lines. In one common method, known as cut-and-cover the city streets are excavated and a tunnel structure strong enough to support the road above is built in the trench, which is then filled in and the roadway rebuilt.

The tunnels are so deep that they go under the riverbeds. Yes, though through tunnels in the rock under the water (there is no contact between the tunnels and the water above. The only water is surface or rain water coming through vents and passenger stations.

Advantages of Metro Rail Eco-friendly – causes no air pollution, much less sound pollution. Low energy consumption – 20% per passenger km in comparison to road-based systems. Greater traffic capacity – carries as much traffic as 7 lanes of bus traffic or 24 lanes of car traffic (either way).

They are using high power and high charges. We cannot use this transportation for some areas in the city.

Metro rail projects provide larger economic and social benefits to the society in terms of reduction in cost and time of travel, substantial reduction in per capita pollution emissions resulting in reduction in chronic diseases, reduction in road accidents, bringing down noise pollution etc.

The method of transport allows us to travel major distances much faster while simultaneously helping us skip the road traffic and greater exposure to pollution. When compared to private automobiles, this mode of transportation is also quite affordable.
