These movies, called features, were long enough to tell a detailed story. Movies were still silent, of course, for sound would not come to films until the late 1920s. Film production, which had once been centered in New York, relocated westward, settling in an area near Los Angeles, California, known as Hollywood.

The 1920’s movie goers experience was largely dominated by silent movies but saw the introduction of synchronized sound.

Until the late 1920’s, motion pictures were silent except for the musical accompaniment provided by theatre owners in the form of live orchestras. In this system, sound effects and music were recorded on a wax record that would later be synchronized with the film projector.

They used small microphones instead of big horns to collect the sounds, and they had devices called amplifiers that could make those sounds louder. With electricity, they could make recordings that were loud enough for everyone in a large movie theater to hear.

Movies were fun. They provided a change from the day-to-day troubles of life. They also were an important social force. Young Americans tried to copy what they saw in the movies.

Silent-film actors emphasized body language and facial expression so that the audience could better understand what an actor was feeling and portraying on screen. Much silent film acting is apt to strike modern-day audiences as simplistic or campy.

Films from the so-called silent era were ‘silent’ because for the most part there was no soundtrack included on the film print. Although Eugene Lauste patented a sound-on-film system as early as 1907, the first films with soundtracks did not appear, in a few experimental shorts, until the early 1920s.

As you can see from the sample page, actors in silent films not only followed scripts, but the scripts were incredibly detailed in comparison to a modern screenplay. In many sections, Phantom of the Opera reads more like a novel than a screenplay.

Showings of silent films usually were not actually silent: they were commonly accompanied by live music. Early in the development of the motion picture industry, it was learned that music was an essential part of any movie, as it gave the audience emotional cues for the action taking place on the screen.

When sound came in, the frame rate was changed to 24 frames per second. This means that when silent films are projected at the current, faster frame rate, the action appears to be accelerated, because they are being shown at a frame rate 50% faster than what they were photographed at.

After further fine-tuning and some light bulb adjustments, the era of silent films was about to come to an end due to successful sound synchronization. Theatrical orchestras and scripted music had become such a cultural norm in film that synced sound didn’t become widely accepted until a few years after.

Sometimes they used the dreaded klieg lights, which irritated eyes. In all cases, special makeup was needed to “normalize” appearances on screen. (Most actors were expected to apply it themselves.)
