A tailcoat is a knee-length coat characterised by a rear section of the skirt, known as the tails, with the front of the skirt cut away. The tailcoat shares its historical origins in clothes cut for convenient horse riding in the Early Modern era.

When it comes to outfitting specifics, there are essential differences between the two. While a tuxedo is ideal for both, it only requires tails for a white tie occasion.

White tie is the most formal of dress codes and is not common today. Before the Second World War it was standard evening dress for gentlemen, as may be seen in period dramas on television. Today white tie is worn in the evening at certain royal ceremonies and balls, and state and livery dinners.
