In the late 1800’s, Zeta Tau Alpha was founded by nine young women attending the State Female Normal School (later Longwood College) in Farmville, Virginia. In 1897, the group was referred to by Maud Jones (one of the founders) as “our little crowd”.

Zeta Tau Alpha is known as a fraternity, not as a sorority. A “sorority” is an organization whose members have banded together for reasons of common interest and mutual benefit. There is usually some element of secrecy in its design.

What are ZTA’s colors? The strawberry is special to Zeta Tau Alpha because a secret admirer of one of the founders gave her a basket of strawberries, and this gave them the inspiration for their first meeting.

The Greek letters Zeta Tau Alpha are arranged around the crown, and they are the initial letters of our open motto is “Zeta ta Arista,” which means, “Seek the Noblest.” Our secret motto is “Let us be united in love.” This pin shall be worn only by those regularly initiated into this Fraternity.

Zeta Tau Alpha Initiation Ritual. The Conductor leads the Candidate to the door of the Initiation room, having ascertained either in the playing of music or by having sounded the whistle that all is in readiness. The Epimeletes then approaches the door, gives the five distinct knocks, and opens the door.

From that research, we found that sisterhood can be categorized into Five Sisterhood Areas: Shared Social Experiences, Support & Encouragement, Belonging, Accountability and Common Purpose.

Zeta Tau Alpha (known as ZTA or Zeta) is an international women’s fraternity founded on October 15, 1898 at the State Female Normal School (now Longwood University) in Farmville, Virginia.

Zeta Tau Alpha was created to make a difference in the lives of our members by developing the potential of each individual. Our goal is to connect members through a close bond of sisterhood and to build up a purer and nobler womanhood in the world.

Over the past decade, the Gamma Rho Chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha has raised more than $800,000 in support of breast cancer education and awareness!

Cost: $800 Anyone using Fraternity and/or chapter funds to attend Convention must attend full-time. This includes collegiate and alumnae delegates and National Officers.

Zeta Tau Alpha, which has been a proud Panhellenic partner since 1909, supports the values and ideals of the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC). These core values include friendship, leadership, service, knowledge, integrity and community.
