The House of Representatives votes 346 to 17 to approve citations of contempt against 10 Hollywood writers, directors, and producers.

The blacklist was implemented by the Hollywood studios to promote their patriotic credentials in the face of public attacks and served to shield the film industry from the economic harm that would result from an association of its product with subversives.

The blacklist involved the practice of denying employment to entertainment industry professionals believed to be or to have been Communists or sympathizers. While there is no official Hollywood “blacklist” per se, there are a number of people whose careers seemed to fall off a cliff, and not because of a lack of talent. Blacklisting is the action of a group or authority, compiling a blacklist (or black list) of people, countries or other entities to be avoided or distrusted as being deemed unacceptable to those making the list. As a verb, blacklist can mean to put an individual or entity on such a list.
