Now, the national average has dropped below $2 per gallon, which is something the US hasn’t seen since 2016. The last time we saw a sustained period of gas below $2 per gallon was all the way back in 2004.

Between 1930 and 2015, the average price of regular gasoline has ranged from a low of $1.43 per gallon in 1998 to a high of $3.69 per gallon in 2012 when measured in constant 2015 dollars. The effect of the U.S. embargo of Iranian oil can be seen in the early 1980’s with the price of gasoline peaking in 1982.

Hawaii tops the list. Missouri has the cheapest gas.

Experts warn that March could be among the most expensive months for gasoline prices nationwide.

Americans are likely to pay an average of $2.60 a gallon in 2020, according to fuel savings app GasBuddy’s annual forecast. On the whole, drivers haven’t paid more than $3 nationwide since 2014, when prices averaged $3.36, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

More demand equals higher prices Higher oil prices brought on by a pickup in economic activity and subsequent demand for fuel is driving the increase in gas prices.

Texans are paying the third-lowest cost at $2.76 per gallon, while Louisiana and Mississippi have the lowest recorded prices up in the U.S., at about $2.72, AAA said. Other states within the low range of under $2.87 included North Dakota, Minnesota, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas and Alabama.

California is reported to have the highest gas price across the nation, followed by Hawaii, Nevada, Washington and Oregon.
