Significance: The Panic of 1857 that quickly and suspiciously followed the application of the Tariff caused frustrated northern industrialists to demand a higher duty, a manifestation of the innate desire for increased protection, and creating a new platform for the Republican Party in the election of 1860.

Lecompton Constitution. pro-slavery constitution written for Kansas’ admission to the union in opposition to the anti-slavery Topeka Constitution; it was eventually rejected and Kansas became a free state in 1861.

By 1857, Kansas had enough people to apply for statehood, and those for slavery devised the Lecompton Constitution, which provided that the people were only allowed to vote for the constitution “with slavery” or “without slavery.”

This new constitution enshrined slavery in the proposed state and protected the rights of slaveholders. In addition, the constitution provided for a referendum that allowed voters the choice of allowing more slaves to enter the territory.

Results. The result of the Panic of 1857 was that the largely-agrarian southern economy, which had few railroads, suffered little, but the northern economy took a significant hit and made a slow recovery.

Bank performance depended not only on regional conditions and links to eastern banks, but on the ability to coordinate behavior. Southern branch banks and coinsuring banks in Ohio and Indiana were particularly successful.

The immediate causes of the panic of 1857 were the embezzlement in the home office of the Ohio Life Insurance and Trust Company, and the wreck of the Central America at about the same time. The Central America was a merchant marine ship loaded with gold bullion.

(McPherson, p. 189) The immediate event that touched off the panic was the failure on August 24 of the New York City branch of the Ohio Life Insurance and Trust Co., a major financial force that collapsed following widespread embezzlement.

The year was 1857, and U.S. banks needed that gold to reach its destination safely. The banks had invested in businesses that were failing, and this was causing the American people to panic. Investors were losing heavily in the stock market and railroads were unable to pay their debts.

Railroads were the nation’s largest non-agricultural employer. Banks and other industries were putting their money in railroads. So when the banking firm of Jay Cooke and Company, a firm heavily invested in railroad construction, closed its doors on September 18, 1873, a major economic panic swept the nation.

Crop failures, Insurance and banking failure, drops in cotton prices, rapid speculation in land, sudden plunges in the stock market and currency and credit crises etc caused the economic panics in 1800s. The Panic of 1893 has been traced to many causes. One of the causes can be traced back to Argentina. Investment was encouraged by the Argentine agent bank, Baring Brothers. However, the 1890 wheat crop failure and a failed coup in Buenos Aires ended further investments.

The Baring crisis or the Panic of 1890 was an acute recession. Although less serious than other panics of the era, it is the nineteenth century’s most famous sovereign debt crisis, and the 17th largest decline in U.S. stock market history.
