The biggest source of conflict between Native Americans and European settlers was the issue of land ownership and land use. Europeans felt land should be privately owned, while Native Americans believed land should by owned and used by everyone.

Pre-Columbian Native Americans lacked metal tools: so Europeans felt they were superior. Centuries of continental isolation meant the Native Americans had no immunity.

As hostilities grew between the English colonists and the Powhatan Indians, Henry witnessed some horrific events. One such incident occurred when Captain Ratcliff paid a visit the Powhatan to trade English goods (usually copper, beads, and other items) for corn.

War and violence While epidemic disease was by far the leading cause of the population decline of the American indigenous peoples after 1492, there were other contributing factors, all of them related to European contact and colonization.

This close alliance, which was based on mutual respect and good treatment from both sides, led the Natives to side with the French in their conflicts with the English settlers that came later in the 1600s and into the mid-1700s. Relations between the Natives and the English were not nearly as good.

The British colonists were supported at various times by the Iroquois, Catawba, and Cherokee tribes, and the French colonists were supported by Wabanaki Confederacy member tribes Abenaki and Mi’kmaq, and the Algonquin, Lenape, Ojibwa, Ottawa, Shawnee, and Wyandot tribes.
