As early as 1952, Ampex developed prototype video tape recorders that used a spinning head and relatively slow-moving tape. In early 1956, a team produced the first videotape recorder.

Sell your eight-track tapes through online classifieds (such as the 8-Track Heaven or Craigslist classifieds). Pricing is subjective, but serious collectors will pay between $3.00 and $6.00 for eight- track tapes that are in good shape.

They are called 8-track tapes because each of the four programs is comprised of two tracks playing simultaneously to provide stereo sound. Thus, factory-installed 8-track players were phased out in the early 1980s and cartridge production was scaled back through the decade while cassette availability increased.

The first use of magnetic tape technology was with the reel-to-reel tape recorder from the 1940s. Before Ford installed 8-track, consumers would have to either buy a very expensive car to enjoy music tapes, or stick with the radio.

At launch, the 8-track retailed for $30, nearly three times the cost of the CD and $10 more than the vinyl edition. Today it’s worth around $100.

Ideal for travel, the 8-track cartridge threatened to replace the vinyl LP until the compact cassette stole its thunder. Audiophiles say the 8-track delivers a better sonic experience than modern pop’s processed digital files.

It was quite common for a single song on an album to fade out and fade back in as it transitioned to a new track. Eight-track tapes consisted of actually 4 tracks (each in stereo, totaling 8). Unfortunately, this meant that they had to be equal in length, which didn’t necessarily jive with the original LP.

An EP is a medium-length album that has a fewer number of songs than an LP or full length album, usually 4 to 6 songs long. The difference between EP and LP is that an LP is ‘Long Playing’ and generally has more than 8 tracks. Whereas, as above an EP has 4-6 tracks.
