Greenwood is a historic freedom colony in Tulsa, Oklahoma. As one of the most prominent concentrations of African-American businesses in the United States during the early 20th century, it was popularly known as America’s “Black Wall Street”….Greenwood District, Tulsa.

African Americans in Oklahoma and Indian Territories would create their own communities for many reasons. Escape from discrimination and abuse would be a driving factor. All-Black settlements offered the advantage of being able to depend on neighbors for financial assistance and of having open markets for crops.

All-Black towns grew in Indian Territory after the Civil War when the former slaves of the Five Civilized Tribes settled together for mutual protection and economic security. These former slaves, or “Freedmen,” founded farming communities that supported a variety of businesses.

This year’s tour took place in Fort Gibson and Muskogee, in eastern Oklahoma. Oklahoma’s unique history with the all-black towns came about starting with the Trail of Tears, the forced removal of Native American tribes from the Southeastern part of the country to Indian Territory, which is now present-day Oklahoma.

Eatonville, Florida, is the oldest black-incorporated municipality in the United States. Incorporated in 1887, it is the first town successfully established by African American freedmen.

But for most black Peruvians, who make up around 10% of Peru’s 29.5m population, there is little they can do to change their options. The majority are trapped in poverty and lack opportunities: Indigenous and African-descendants in Peru earn 40% less than mixed-race people, says Hugo Nopo.

Slavery was a legal labour form in Chile from 1536 to 1823 but it was never the dominant way of arranging labour. Slavery of black people bloomed from 1580 to 1660.

Since colonial times, the Chilean culture has been a mix of Spanish colonial elements with elements of indigenous (mostly Mapuche) culture, as well as that of other immigrant cultures. The Huasos of Central Chile and their native or folk music and dance are central to Chilean folk culture.

Genetics studies fluctuate between 51.6% and 67.9% European; between 32.1% and 44.3% amerindian; and 2.5%—6.3% African ancestry percentages.

Chile banned slavery in 1811 through the Freedom of Wombs law made by Manuel de Salas, seven years after he had read the following announcement in a newspaper: “For sale: 22 to 24-year-old mulatto, nice condition, good price”.

Chile won its independence from Spain in the early 19th century and its history with democracy is longer than many Latin American countries. However, tens of thousands of people were estimated to have been imprisoned, tortured or killed during the 1973-90 rule of Gen. Augusto Pinochet.
