As a local and national labor leader, Gompers sought to build the labor movement into a force powerful enough to transform the economic, social and political status of America’s workers.

Gompers founded the American Federation of Labor (AFL), and served as the organization’s president from 1886 to 1894, and from 1895 until his death in 1924. He promoted harmony among the different craft unions that comprised the AFL, trying to minimize jurisdictional battles.

According to Gompers, the main objective of the trade union movement is to increase wages and achieving better working conditions. The trade union should not participate in the class struggle for changing the social system. Workers should receive increasingly more goods through evolution and not violent revolution.

Samuel Gompers met Theodore Roosevelt while campaigning for an 1882 bill to ban cigar manufacturing in New York tenement buildings.

Gompers was born in London, England, on January 26, 1850. His parents were poor immigrant Jews from Holland. In London the young Sam was apprenticed to a shoemaker at age 10. He soon changed trades and became a cigar maker, a trade he brought with him to New York when his family emigrated to America in 1863.

One example of a labor union is the Harvard Union of Clerical and Technical Workers. The union represents employees of Harvard University who work in roles such as administration and computer support.

Today most labor unions (or trade unions) in the United States are members of one of two larger umbrella organizations: the American Federation of Labor–Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) or the Change to Win Federation, which split from the AFL-CIO in 2005-2006.

The fact of the matter is, in the modern business world unions are obsolete. Workers no longer need to join a union to be treated fairly by their employers and most private sector employers today provide excellent wages and benefits. Furthermore, unions are disruptive.

The reason is that unions limit the degree of control management has over the workforce. Workers like having a union because they recognize that business is business and their bosses see labor as a cost to cut. Bad managers (far too many of these exist) will harass and fire employees for arbitrary or personal reasons.

They want benefits for their work, which means the corporation has to pay more money per employee. The non union people, management typically, generally dislike unions for the difficulty they cause in their ability to work with their staff to do their jobs.

Unions do not protect bad workers, they protect the collective agreement. Labor law depends a lot on past practice and precedents that are set. By allowing the right of a poor employee to be violated a door is opened for the rights of any member to be violated.
