In the 1940s, professional basketball was not as popular as baseball, boxing or college basketball. Eleven teams and more than 150 players played in that first season, but none of them was black. It was the same for the next three NBA seasons. That was not surprising, because much of America back then was segregated.

For post-World War II Americans, television largely took the movies’ place as a dominant cultural influence. The new medium reached audiences far larger than those attracted by motion pictures, and it projected images right into family’s living rooms. Music and theatre were also popular diversions. Brass and pipe bands, choirs and concert parties toured camps and put on shows for the troops. Other soldiers entertained their mates with impromptu musical, pantomime and comedy performances. Hymn singing was a popular feature of church services.

By the end of the war’s first year, 75 U.S. newspapers had lost their mailing privileges or been forced to change their editorial positions. World War II brought the creation of a military office of censorship. As the war itself spiraled out of control, restrictions on the press became increasingly lax.

Along with the rationing of food, rubber and gasoline, World War II also saw the U.S. government place strict limits on the sale of nylon, a synthetic material needed for ropes, netting and other military equipment.
